I'm Coach Damon and coaching lacrosse goalies is my passion
I still remember that horrible scream back in the Fall of 1999.
In a loose ball drill, a big 225lb defender fell on our backup goalie's knee tearing his ACL and MCL.
Just like that - our lacrosse team was down to a single goalie.
When our coach asked me to give goalie a try, I was up for the challenge.
I threw on a chest protector, grabbed an STX Goalmaster and jumped into the goal to take shots.
The moment a teammate unleashed a lazer over my shoulder without a single movement, I realized this is going to be a LOT harder than I thought 🤣
I had all the common problems you see with newbie goalies:
- Scared of the ball
- Poor communication with the defense
- Flinching on the shot
- Slow reaction time
- Get down on myself mentally each time I let in a goal
- No understanding of angles
- Nervous on the clears
- And on and on...
But I absolutely loved the sport of lacrosse and I was determined to be an amazing goalie.
Our team didn't have a lacrosse goalie coach so I went searching for coaching materials online and at that time, nothing existed!
These were pre YouTube days mind you. And like my Dad likes to say - you kids have it so easy these days.
I finally found a lacrosse goalie coaching book and it had stick figures to demonstrate proper save technique:
Pretty clear, right?
So I attended live goalie camps in the summer ...
And practiced and trained ...
I studied all the top lacrosse goalies...
I remember getting a VHS copy of the 2000 NCAA D1 Men's National Championship game between Princeton and Syracuse and watching that over and over. Trevor Tierney and Rob Mulligan were absolute legends.
Then I practiced and trained some more ...
I enrolled in a sports psychology course at Cal to study the mental side of being a great goalie.
By my Senior year I was an All-American goalie and a team captain after knowing nothing about the position just 4 years earlier.

I've been through the transformation from a nervous beginner to a confident goalie and a leader of team. And I want the same for you!
That's why I started Lax Goalie Rat, a blog and podcast with a single focus of making you a better lacrosse goalie.
I've had the opportunity to speak with so many elite goalies and coaches (the podcast has 74 - and counting - episodes now) to get their feedback and ideas on how to train an elite goalie.
I actually spoke with my goalie idols Trevor Tierney and Rob Mulligan along with every single PLL goalie.
I've learned so much from these elite goalies that has formed how I now think about and coach this great position.
All that experience and knowledge can be found inside the pages of The Lax Goalie Bible.
An elite lacrosse goalie must have an understanding of the 3 areas:
- The Technique (stance, arc, save movement, arc movement, clearing, etc.)
- The Physical (getting your body in shape to be explosive and have great reaction time)
- The Mental (being mentally equipped to deal with failure and setbacks)
Plus we need a solid understanding of the defense and the sport of lacrosse in general. Something we call Lacrosse IQ.
Inside the 135 pages of this book you'll get a full goalie education on all of those areas. What took me 20 years to learn can be yours in a single day!
Plus there are over 50 illustrated drills to help you improve.
I believe this is the best book available to train lacrosse goalies. Period.
Seriously, if you find a better one, let me know. I've purchased every lacrosse goalie training product that exists and while I did learn things from every single one.
None of them are as complete and as easy-to-follow as I've made the Lax Goalie Bible.
Lacrosse is my passion and I love coaching goalies!
Only question I have - will it be you?
